Latino immigrants who came to reconstruct New Orleans after it was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were victims of wage theft, hazardous work conditions and harassment by employers. Some were exposed to dangerous substances at work such as mold, contaminated water or asbestos.
According to teleSUR “When we weren’t paid, we didn’t even have money for food,” said plaintiff Sergio de Leon, who worked during October cleaning toxic mud and mold from city schools. “These companies are robbing us of our money after we worked so hard.”
